This pivotal work, created when the artist was just 23, is celebrated as a breakthrough in Color Field painting. Its ethereal washes of pigment on raw canvas evoke the vastness of the Nova Scotia landscape, blending memory and emotion into a symphony of translucent blues, greens, and coral pinks.

Frankenthaler's revolutionary soak-stain technique thinning oil paint with turpentine and pouring it onto unprimed canvas allowed the paint to become one with the fabric, creating luminous, stain-like forms that influenced contemporaries such as Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland.
