Frankenthaler, a central figure in postwar American art, is renowned for her 'soak-stain' technique, where thinned paints were poured directly onto raw canvas, creating ethereal washes of color that seem to breathe and flow. In Leveling, she masterfully orchestrates a composition of floating shapes and delicate veils a testament to her innovative approach that bridged Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting.
